Music essay on “Break Stuff” by Limp Bizkit for The Sound of Rock

posted 2 weeks ago

This is a copy of the final paper I had to do for my class on “The Sound of Rock” during my time at The University of Ottawa, a class for which I received an A+ grade.

We were given a selection of texts and songs to choose from, and had to write an essay about one of the songs using one of the analytical techniques present in one of the texts. I chose Ryan Moore’s Sells Like Teen Spirit: Music, Youth Culture and Social Crisis (2009) and  Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff” from their Significant Other album (1999). Don’t ask me how I managed to write over 2000 words about a Limp Bizkit song which is less than three minutes long. But I did, and here it is.

I’ve started writing for Born Music Online! Like our Facebook page!

posted 1 month ago

Yes, you can now read lots of my work at Born Music Online. Being in Canada, my current focus is on album/single reviews and occasional articles, but when I am back in Birmingham I also intend to do reviews of live shows too. Please support Born Music by liking our Facebook page, we need to get the word out as we’re a new group!

Born Music aims to focus on the Midlands music scene, but also give attention to nationally-known, established acts as well. You can find a list of all articles by me, here, if that takes your fancy.

Local bands, feel free to submit your work to me (contact me here, on Facebook, or on Twitter, links on the left of this page), if you want reviewing.

I now write about WWE for Bleacher Report

posted 2 months ago

Hello readers!

I haven’t updated this in a while as I have minimised my music buying while I study in Canada - I need to be able to bring it all back to the UK with me when I leave shortly, and that means limiting how much I carry with me. It has also restricted how many gigs I can get to - the live music scene here is less active than in the UK.

However I have filled my time by writing for Bleacher Report, and you can view my “Sports Writer’s Profile” here. So far I have only written articles about professional-wrestling promotion WWE, but technically I am eligible for writing about and and all sports featured on the site, as I wish, having passed the application test for being a Bleacher Report Sports Writer.

Oasis - Be Here Now [for Sputnik Music]

posted 6 months ago

Far from an incredible album, but one that is unique in some of its flaws, which carry a strange gonzo appeal - being so distinctive is very rare in music, where everyone takes influence from each other. To review an album is to study it, and this made for an interesting study case.

W.A.S.P. - Babylon’s [for Sputnik Music]

posted 6 months ago

If I had to pick one band which has been very misjudged, it’s W.A.S.P.. They are a true, authentic heavy metal band in every sense of the word, frequently put into the “hair metal” box, in which they do not really belong. A lot of hair metal fans somewhat endorse this view, which does not help things either, failing to recognise that Blackie Lawless is worlds more talented than the rest of the glam pack. Even though I felt their most recent album was not their best, this made me feel it was worth highlighting the band to people.
